The Taxpayer Advocate Service was created in the 1990s to help the average taxpayer avoid financial hardship due to IRS problems.
The TAS will “advocate” to the IRS, on behalf of taxpayers, and even testify before Congress. They frequently provide recommendations as to how the IRS can better serve the public.
There are a few thousand employees within the TAS, and they have offices located all over the country.
When a taxpayer feel unfairly targeted and is suffering from a financial hardship because of an IRS lien or levy, the Advocate can help!
Does this mean you don’t need to hire a tax professional? No, in many cases, the tax professional will work with a TAS representative to work out the best solution.
If you need a levy released, then it’s definitely worth your time to get in contact with the Taxpayer Advocate Service and an attorney.
